Burned: A Story of Murder and the Crime That Wasn't

Was a monstrous killer brought to justice or an innocent mother condemned?

On an April night in 1989, Jo Ann Parks survived a house fire that claimed the lives of her three small children. Though the fire at first seemed a tragic accident, investigators soon reported finding evidence proving that Parks had sabotaged wiring, set several fires herself, and even barricaded her four-year-old son inside a closet to prevent his escape. Though she insisted she did nothing wrong, Jo Ann parks received a life sentence without parole based on the power of forensic fire science that convincingly proved her guilt.

But more than a quarter century later, a revolution in the science of fire has exposed many of the incontrovertible truths of 1989 as guesswork in disguise. The California Innocence Project is challenging Parks's conviction and the so-called science behind it, claiming that false assumptions and outright bias convicted an innocent mother of a crime that never actually happened.

If Parks is exonerated, she could well be the "Patient Zero" in an epidemic of overturned guilty verdicts - but only if she wins. Can prosecutors dredge up enough evidence and roadblocks to make sure Jo Ann Parks dies in prison? No matter how her last-ditch effort for freedom turns out, the scenes of betrayal, ruin, and hope will leave listeners longing for justice we can trust.

This was a difficult review to write because of the emotions of being a mother myself. The thought of losing my own children, I don’t think I would ever recover from. Nightmares do happen, we all have them, but Jo Ann’s was a real reality. My heart goes out to Jo Ann a young mother, she told the readers private & personal information about her life and this must have been difficult to re-open to us strangers. From just living her daily life as a mom, wife & then she lost it all! It was hard to think how Jo Ann felt being called a liar & being blamed for her own children’s deaths, even by her own husband. On page 60 my heart sank as I read about Jo Ann’s arrest & how it went down, when the author writes, she fell to the ground & wailed, I cried too! I made sure checking out my own home’s plugins & any wiring that I felt wasn’t safe, I unplugged it, I don’t know if the author had this in mind, but it was in mine. Pg 61, “A ray of hope”, I read that the California Innocence Project sent Parks a letter, I cried again while reading thinking how Jo Ann must have felt was this a dream, someone out there wanted to prove that she was innocent! I am glad they found Parks Case worthy so worthy!I still don’t know much about fires & flashover, but in all this was truly interesting to read but extremely tragic that anyone would die in this fire & the mother blamed, actually I say, crucified at trial! To be found guilty of a murder, a crime you didn’t commit is in itself a crime! Jo Ann gave us readers another inside about the inside of a prison. Jo Ann is the bravest person I have gotten to know through this book & how she has survived it all & prison, I pray the day will come & she will be set free!

I gave it a four rating because there were a lot of notes and an index at the back of the book that made it appear longer. The price was high for such a short book. It is one of those books you have to come to your own conclusions. Not sure I will read any more of his books which appeared interesting but pretty expensive.

Fascinating look at an arson/murder case - and the evidence used in this case, the same flawed evidence (burn patterns, fire origin determination, etc) used for decades by fire investigators across the US. This book is so thoroughly researched and well written that it should change arson science for the better in courts around the world - and it may just lead to innocent people being freed. Five stars.

i love all ed humes' books, especially true crime. this one was no exception. a tragic story of a woman convicted of killing her 3 small children by setting the house on fire. And conversations with the jury afterwards revealed that her lack of visible remorse and the fact that she didn't rush back into the burning house to save her children was one of the main reasons why she was found guilty. 27 years later she is still in prison. There was a lot of technical information about fire investigation and how fires spread but Mr. Humes made it all interesting and at no time did i feel like i was reading a textbook.

To me a book is RIVETING if I am reading it on my daily bus trip home from the office and it makes me miss my stop. That's what Ed Humes' "Burned" did. His is a well researched, clearly written page turner. It changed my mind about the "fair" trials the constitution guarantees us, the accuracy of fire investigations and how incredibly difficult is the job of Innocence Project lawyers. This is a "MUST READ!"
