Although the main thesis of this book deals with the conversion of Scandinavia from paganism to Christianity around 1000 AD, the author spends much of the book providing background on the Viking Age. Nevertheless, his summary of the history Viking Age which serves as background is well written and easy to read. In some ways, that summary alone makes a book worth reading.Even though this is an academic book, it's not as dry and plodding as academic works often are. The author is not only a skilled historian but a good writer.As for the author's thesis, it seems well supported and makes a lot of sense. Basically, the decision by Scandinavia to convert to Christianity was more a political decision than a religious one. Previously, it was thought the conversion resulted primarily from missionary efforts. Instead, the author sees Scandinavian kings as converting to increase their own political capital and alliances. This may be true, but it seems the author fails to consider the possibility multiple motivations and factors were at play. People are complex and make decision based on a number of reasons. It is not like changing your religion is as easy as changing out the carpet. It seems fair to say many Scandinavians had real personal belief in the pagan religion. In the same way, many of them probably had real personal belief in the Chrisitan religon and had actual spiritual conversion. So, I agree with the author to a certain degree but think there was more involved.Overall a very good read.
My opinion of the book falls between the other reviewers. I do not disagree with Winroth that chieftains and kings and bishops made use of Christianity and baptism for political reasons. The thesis is interesting and would have made a good journal article. What disappoints here is that surely a new religious identity would have some effect on the people, but Winroth does not mention it. He does not fill out the story of the conversion of Scandinavia. So it is not what he says that leaves me questioning, it is what he chooses not to consider. He does not tell the whole story.The book is often redundant, as if he is stretching his material to fill out a book. It also could have been better organized, although there is much useful information given.
An excellent book, but its theme isn't all that radical; in fact, it's not radical at all. The theory that the Scandinavian kings converted out of mercenary motives rather than genuine religious piety has been around since at least the 1980's. I've found references that it may have originated way back in the 1890's, according to some Scandinavian historians.So while the idea isn't all that new, the book is still the best treatment of the Scandinavian conversion that I've read so far. As another reviewer noted, it gives an excellent summary of those areas of Viking history that are pertinent to the subject, which will be of great help to the general reader.One thing that bears special mention is the author's impartiality: he doesn't assign value judgments as to whether the conversion to Christianity was a good or bad thing for Scandinavia overall. If he had an anti-Christian bias, as one reviewer has spuriously alleged, the author would have placed much greater emphasis on the well-attested reports that some Scandinavian kings (Olav Tryggvason in particular) used torture and murder to force recalcitrant subjects to accept the new religion.Another refreshing quality is Wintroth's historical caution: when a source makes statements that are not justified either logically or historically, HE SAYS SO, instead of allowing the reader to mistakenly assume that the statements are historically valid. This is a great improvement on some authors who take a single quote from an unverified account and run with it (sometimes turning it into an entire book).If you're new to Viking history and want to know more about this very significant episode, you really can't do better than this book.
