The Tango War: The Struggle for the Hearts, Minds and Riches of Latin America During World War II

The Tango War by Mary Jo McConahay fills an important gap in World War II history. Beginning in the '30s, both sides were well aware of the need to control not just the hearts and minds but also the resources of Latin America. The fight was often dirty: Residents were captured to exchange for US prisoners of war and rival spy networks shadowed each other across the continent. At all times, it was a Tango War, in which each side closely shadowed the other's steps.

Though the Allies triumphed, at the war's inception it looked like the Axis would win. A flow of raw materials in the Southern Hemisphere, at a high cost in lives, was key to ensuring Allied victory, as were military bases supporting the North African campaign, the Battle of the Atlantic and the invasion of Sicily, and fending off attacks on the Panama Canal. Allies secured loyalty through espionage and diplomacy - including help from Hollywood and Mickey Mouse - while Jews and innocents among ethnic groups - Japanese, Germans - paid an unconscionable price. Mexican pilots flew in the Philippines and 25,000 Brazilians breached the Gothic Line in Italy. The Tango War also describes the machinations behind the greatest mass flight of criminals of the century, fascists with blood on their hands who escaped to the Americas.

The Tango War is full of amazing stories told through the sure hand of a master storyteller. Even though much of the subject matter is dark, there is also great fun to be had in this book. The sweep of Tango War is such that McConahay seamlessly weaves together Orson Welles, Nazi massacres, intrepid U-Boat commanders, colorful spies, the Vatican-supported ratlines spiriting Nazis out of Germany and so much more.Even students of World War II or Latin America will find this book revelatory. I had no idea that the "extraordinary rendition" that happened during the Bush administration had also occurred during World War II. What she relays about this dark chapter in American history is shocking. Finally, in the book's most personal and powerful section, McConahay draws the connections between the violence perpetrated by the European Fascists during World War II and the violence of the Latin American dictatorships of the 1970s and 80s.This is a tremendous book and one with powerful lessons about the past that we forget at our peril.

I was expecting to learn a lot regarding the role of Latin America during WWII. It was not the case. It is more an indictment to the policies of US and the Vatican during WWII.Moreover, the holocaust has been written extensively so it did not add anything new.The “dirty war” in Argentina, Chile and Uruguay did not influence WWII outcomes but certainly it was the outcome of WWII.The attempt of expanding Communism/ Marxism to Latin American was part of the cold war and the writer completely ignored the Cuban, Nicaraguan and Venezuelan disasters. At the same time there are conflicting opinions regarding the numbers of people that disappeared during those years. Also no mention of the Marxist guerrillas activities where many innocent people were kidnapped or killed and not one guerrilla was indicted for it while many military personnel are still in jail.It ppears that a the book was a hurried collection of anecdotes with an anti-American bias.I do not think this book adds anything new to the history of WWII.

Mary Jo McConahay’s The Tango War is not only a long awaited contribution to the struggle between Allies and Axis powers for control of Latin America, but a fascinating read. Instead of giving us a straight history of the World War II period, she divides her 300 page book into fourteen chapters with titles like ”Spies, Masters of Spies,” “Smoking Cobras,” and the intriguing “Seduction.” Her book is idiosyncratic in the best of ways: it gives a kind of collage insight into how Germany, Japan, the U.S. and the United Kingdom maneuvered to control Latin American natural resources such as oil and rubber (the domination of air transport; the role of Walt Disney), but also the role of 25,000 Brazilians who took part in the invasion of Italy. There are chapters about Jews and Nazis (Here’s a disclaimer: the fate of my grandmother and great aunt on the infamous St. Louis and how my father Luis escaped Nazi Germany in 1933 is detailed), but also there are excursuses into the internment of innocent Japanese in both Peru and Panama. What McConahay has done, through countless interviews and by poring through ancillary documents, is to come up with a stunning collage of the war years—Joseph Cornell, comes to mind--that reads more like linked short stories than, say, straight Doris Kearns Goodwin-style history. The Tango War is a lusciously, choreographed journey into a period that so resembles our present realpolitik state. David Unger, Guatemalan author and translator

This is an important book, especially in these times. Especially in these times.Ms McConahay adroitly interleaves a fairly straight up account of a largely forgotten part of WWII, the conflict between the United States and the Axis powers for control of the resources of Latin America, with a wealth of personal histories of survivors. It is marvelous that she has managed to track down the families of so many distant innocents whose lives were overturned or destroyed by the dark machinations of American foreign policy in the thirties and forties, kidnappings and renditions, much like those that horrify us even today. She has a reporter’s nose for a good story, and a fine, easy style of laying the complexities and subterfuge bare. There are many villains in these stories, from both sides of the Atlantic, and as many heroes.

All the praise I have for "Tango" has been amply expressed by other five star reviewers. I live in Guatemala and pride myself with being reasonably well informed on WWII. But Mary Jo McConahay led me down some dark alleys with her flashlight and illuminated events obscured by the dust of time. Nothing pedantic in her style. The first hand accounts and places she visited bring authenticity and immediacy to what was once a vibrant and dreadful time.

This book is so engaging.I strongly recommend it. There is so much I never knew about what was happening in Latin America during WWII. Ms McConahay blends historical happenings with fascinating personal stories from survivors and their families. I normally am not a history buff ... and I cannot put this down. How the Axis and the Allies fought for the hearts & minds of the Latin American people and then took their soul!

Well written and seemingly well researched.

Readable and interesting. The book covers a breadth of topics, and I think most readers would find many of the topics interesting.
